Our History

Established 2017

Mayfield Beef Shorthorns was established in 2017 shortly after the purchase of Leazes Farm in 2016.

We are based in the beautiful Weardale, County Durham. It is in this region of North-East England where shorthorns were first bred from local Teeswater and Durham cattle at the end of the 17th century. The local region has a long standing history of farms using Shorthorn cattle (mainly dual purpose type). We were looking at traditional local cattle and sheep to farm( which also made commercial sense) and chose Beef Shorthorn Cattle and Teeswater Sheep.

Five foundation females were purchased from the Chapelton and the Upsall herds. At the same time, carefully selected embryos were purchased from Canada and Australia. The embryos were placed in Beef Shorthorn x Aberdeen Angus recipients.

The notable first calf born on the farm was Mayfield Maximus Primus. He has built a significant reputation and sons of him have sold all over the UK. The first two heifer calves on the farm are also both still active as breeding stock.

Carefully selected genetics to thrive on grass-based forage systems.

Current & Future

We currently calf around 60 cows a year. This is a mixture of 2/3 normal breeding stock and 1/3 recipients with embryo calves.

We will increase cattle numbers further over the next few years to around 120-150 calving cows a year, and we will continue to bring in a constant stream of new and commercial efficient genetics to further develop our herd.
